Assamese told to prove ‘nationality’ in Agra

An Assamese student was denied entry into the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daula in Agra by security personnel. They called her a “foreigner” and asked her to “prove Indian nationality”, she has alleged.

Manjita Chanu, who visited the monument early this month, alleged that the guards were “extremely rude” to her and repeatedly asked her to prove her nationality, even though she had tickets that are issued only to Indian nationals.

Her Facebook post narrating her ordeal has been shared by 5,149 people and commented upon by about 1,900 people. “Is this the land of my India? Am I safe here or not?” she wrote on Facebook.

Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials in Agra told

The Hindu that they were not aware of the incident. “We will enquire and see what happened,” said a senior ASI official.
