Ammunition seized in Imphal

A huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered by a team of police of the Shangshak police station in Ukhurl district and 41 Assam Rifles, official reports said on Monday. Assam Rifles source said that there were three pistols, two Chinese hand grenades and a number of assorted ammunition.

Meanwhile, two Chinese hand grenades were found strapped in branches of a tree at the roadside at Lokchao near Moreh, the legalised border trade centre. Located a little distance away from the camp of a security force it was a death trap for security personnel and other traders who travel along NH 102 every day. In the past a few personnel and civilians were killed and injured in such remote controlled

blasts.

Official sources said that two civilians and one rebel were killed in February. Besides during this month’s insurgency 10 civilians, six security personnel and one rebel were wounded in insurgency-related violence. Police and security forces could also arrest 62 rebels from various places in the state during this month.

14 guns, 6 hand grenades, explosives and ammunition including incriminating materials were seized from the arrested rebels. Police have confirmed that the rebel who was lynched by the villagers of Mukbi in Tamenglong district was a rebel of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang). He was identified as Gaimangngam (32) of the same district. On February 28 he had allegedly shot and wounded one widow, Gulchangliu (44) in her home. It is not known why the widow was attacked.
