Women representation in Courts to be increased: CJI

Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, Kurian Joseph during the inaugural function of the "Ruby Jubilee Celebrations" of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh in Shimla on Saturday.

Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishanan on Saturday said the need of hour is to increase the representation of women in the contemporary judicial system.

While speaking in the Ruby Jubilee celebrations of Himachal High Court the Chief Justice said the steps are already on to appoint more and more women judges now. He also spoke on the social impact of legal judgements and its consequence on the socio-economic betterment of poor and needy.

“Our legal system should make contribution to change the face of the society and empower the deprived and depressed through the legal judgements,” said the Chief Justice.

Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, retired Judge of Supreme Court of India in his address said that a dynamic and daring determination was required to reduce the pendency of cases in the courts. It was imperative to ensure that social, political and economic justice is given to everyone. Every citizen had the right to pursue struggle for a better and peaceful life and for this he could seek the help of judiciary, he said.

Justice Kurian Joseph, Chief Justice of the H.P. High Court said that 53 thousand cases are pending in H.P. High Court and time bound target has been fixed for their disposal. He pleaded with the State Government to set up at least ten Gram Nyayalayas (Village Courts) in Himachal Pradesh.

In his Presidential address, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said that the State Government would consider setting up of Gram Nyayalayas in phased manner for the speedy justice to people at their door steps. The State Government in consultation with High Court has also set up 'Fast Track Courts' at District Level for speedy disposal of cases, he said.
