ULFA militant killed in encounter

A militant of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed in an encounter with a joint team of the police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Gandhia Gharmora village under Ghilamora police station in Lakhimpur district early on Thursday.

A Chinese hand grenade, four cellphones, Rs. 1.19 lakh and some AK-47 ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. The slain insurgent was identified as Darika Saikia, 45. Police sources said three other ULFA cadres escaped. The team was led by Additional Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Mrinal Talukdar.

In the city, the police arrested an ULFA cadre from a rented house in the Borbori area. He was identified as Binoy Baishya.
