Rabindranath Tagore’s “message of tolerance and peace has never been more relevant,” said United States Ambassador Timothy J. Roemer here on Tuesday during a visit to the Nobel laureate’s ancestral home at Jorasanko.
“Tagore’s dream of mutual understanding continues to inspire a new generation and his message of tolerance and peace has never been more relevant. May his ideals continue to inspire us all to work towards a better world,” said Mr. Roemer, who is in the city the first time after assuming office.
His visit to the “historic residence of the great Bengali poet” helped him to appreciate Tagore’s significance “not only in Bengali culture, but for all of India and for the world,” Mr Roemer said.

“Tagore knew that mutual understanding could be developed only by interacting with diverse cultures. To that end, he was a world traveller and visited many countries in his quest for knowledge, including six visits to the United States,” the Ambassador said.

Mr. Roemer also called on West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
