Siliguri-based organisation calls 48-hour bandh

Updated - October 17, 2016 03:11 pm IST - Siliguri

A 48-hour general strike has been called in Darjeeling and adjoining Jalpaiguri district by a Siliguri-based organisation ‘Bangla O Bangla Bhasa Bachaon Committee’ from Saturday to protest against the demand for Gorkhaland by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

The Darjeeling hills and Dooars in Jalpaiguri district are already undergoing a 96-hour bandh called by the GJM to press the government to come out with a clear stand on the Gorkhaland issue.

“The bandh has been called to protest against the demand for Gorkhaland and prolonged ‘inhumane, anti-people and communal activities’ of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in the Darjeeling Hills,” the president of the organisation, Mukunda Majumder told PTI here today.

The GJM had called for a 96-hour bandh ending today, in Darjeeling hills and the adjoining Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district

“It is obvious that there would be no supply of essentials in the hills during our bandh and we can’t help it,” he said.
