Scuffle between policemen and WB Assembly staff

A scuffle broke out between a policeman and the staff at the West Bengal Assembly this morning over a trivial issue of fetching drinking water from a tap.

The situation became tense after a large number of the assembly staff gathered to protest alleged heckling of a member by a policeman and pushed and shoved him around.

The policeman had gone into the records room at around 10.30 AM to fetch some drinking water when an Assembly staffer refused to allow him resulting in an altercation.

“There was an altercation when a policeman on duty went to get some drinking water from an office in the assembly premises,” Joint Commissioner of Police headquarter Jawed Shamim said.

A large number of the staff gathered and on spotting the policeman, chased him and also landed some blows on him, an eyewitness said.

He fled into the main building through the entrance used by the Speaker and the Chief Minister.

The Assembly is in the midst of the budget session and began proceedings at 11 AM.
