Only Assam DGP authorised to talk to media

November 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - Guwahati:

Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay has issued an order that barring him no police official will talk to the media regarding investigation in the cash-for-job scam in the State Public Service Commission.

When contacted, Mr Sahay told PTI: “The government said only I will talk to the media and others should not talk. Only I am authorised to speak. This is a very sensitive case with many nuances. Somebody speaking something may harm the investigation. That is why it was decided that only the DGP will speak about it.”

“At times, some speculative news gets published in media quoting police sources and that can adversely affect the investigation by creating confusions,” he said.

“After all, we are investigating cases against constitutional functionaries because the chairman and members of APSC are constitutional posts. So we have to be very tight about the investigation and it cannot be allowed to be affected by any extraneous factors,” Mr Sahay added.

The order was issued on November 11, a week after Assam Public Service Commission’s chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul was arrested in the alleged corruption in civil services examinations conducted by the organisation.

Yesterday, APSC member Basanta Kumar Doley was arrested in connection with the cash-for-job scam.

Doley is the third APSC member to be arrested after Paul and member Samedur Rahman earlier this month.
