Maharashtra MoS for Home Ram Shinde had said that he had asked police to probe contents of the Aamir Khan film.

Contradicting his Cabinet colleague, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that his government had no plan to ban the movie PK.

Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home, Ram Shinde, had on Tuesday ordered an inquiry against the film, after several Hindutva organisations complained that the film hurt religious sentiments.

“The film is already certified by the censor board. There will be no other inquiry. The government will take care of the screening without law and order problems. There is no question of banning the film,” Mr. Fadnavis clarified. He added that cinemas would be provided security, if needed.

Mr. Shinde had asked Deven Bharti, Special IG (Law and Order), to submit a report to the government explaining whether the movie hurt the sentiments of Hindus.

The Hindutva organisations, such as the Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), have sought a ban on the film saying that it was disrespectful to the Hindu religion.

Actor Aamir Khan made a statement saying he never intended to disrespect the Hindu religion through his film. “My Hindu friends have seen the film and they have not found anything objectionable in it. The 99 per cent people associated with this project are Hindus. No one would do such thing,” he had said earlier.

Protests in Delhi

Scores of Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest outside two cinemas here on Wednesday, demanding a ban on the film.
