Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, in the midst of the Adarsh Society scam, on Wednesday received unexpected support from a political rival, with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray saying the Chief Minister should resign only if found guilty after a proper investigation and not because a section of the media wanted him to go.
“Some newspapers should not decide whether the Chief Minister should go or continue in office. If he has done something wrong, he should be punished. But a proper investigation has to be done,” Mr. Thackeray said.
Action should be taken against corrupt officials as well. “Why should only politicians be accountable? Even the administrators should be answerable. We never see any action being taken against them. At the most, they are transferred,” he said.

Mr. Thackeray said the information coming out in the case was very confusing. “You all bring out this information. Do you yourself understand what is happening?' he asked the media.
He added that it was important to see the position taken by the Opposition party.

On the results of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation elections, he said the MNS would decide in a day about the future course of action. The party won 27 seats.
Asked about the possibility of an alliance with some party, he said the MNS was an “untouchable” for everyone. “We will show our own pattern. Our doors are open for everyone. But the voter votes for a particular ideological position. I will not compromise on that.”
