The water levels in the major rivers in Manipur are slowly receding.

Irrigation and Flood Control Department officials told The Hindu that some rivers, however, are running above the danger level.

The overflowing of major rivers in and around Imphal was caused by the rise in the level of the Singda dam at Kangchup. The Manipur People's Party has been demanding opening of the dam gates.

The people affected by floods in several villages are taking shelter in relief camps. A government spokesman said the inmates were provided food, medicare and clothes.

At least 10 houses were washed away at Kadangband in the Imphal West district. Hundreds of houses were flooded. Three houses were buried by landslips at Chingkhu.

Work at the District and Sessions Court in Imphal has been suspended since Wednesday as the court rooms are flooded. Most of the roads are flooded and traffic diverted. The flood waters have entered the Manipur Zoological garden at Iroishemba. It is feared that some animals may have been affected by the waters.
