The remaining four lanes of the eight-lane Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, better known as the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), India's first cable-stayed bridge in the open sea, were opened on Wednesday amid much fanfare. The sea link was first inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) last June.
“Although delayed, such a huge project was never before done in the history of Mumbai. The whole country is proud of it,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said at the inauguration function.
He reiterated his government's “vision to make Mumbai a global city and Maharashtra a global State.” The government has accepted many projects based on the public-private partnership model, with various works worth around Rs. 50,000 crore being underway, he said.
