Hashimpura case verdict a miscarriage of justice: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday termed the acquittal of suspects in the 1987 Hashimpura massacre case as a “clear case of miscarriage of justice”.

The acquittal of suspects charge-sheeted in the 1987 Hashimpura massacre of minority community has come as a shock to every citizen having faith in the judicial system of the country, the party said in a statement.

“All 16 accused have been let free by the Tis Hazaari court in a judgment pronounced on Saturday leaving the victims and their families distraught and broken. The irony is that the culprits in the case are policemen who were supposed to be the keepers of the law. The long ordeal of the survivors in pursuit of justice has come to a sad end in the lower court after 28 years,” the statement read.

The party has argued that the ‘abortion’ of justice in the Hashimpura case of is due to a weak prosecution put forward by the State. “It can only be compensated with a proper appeal and strong pursuance of the case in the higher court with a clear intention of rendering justice to the families of the 42 people belonging to the minority community killed in the incident in Meerut district in 1987 at the hands of the inhuman Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel presumably acting under the orders of their political masters,” the party said.

The court has given benefit of doubt to the accused regarding their identification and not regarding the incident hence justice stands a clear chance if pursued with proper will.

Any derailment of justice in this case will further dampen the spirit of the downtrodden, minorities and marginalized in the society who already feel threatened under the present regime at the Centre led by the BJP, the statement said.
