A 61-year-old patient suffering from liver cirrhosis in Delhi got a new lease of life when he received a cadaver liver on Thursday at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals from a brain dead patient in Lucknow. The patient had been waiting for liver transplant for 45 days.
“As soon as Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, received information from King George Medical University, Lucknow, about availability of a cadaver liver, the hospital authorities sprang into action and the organ was flown from Lucknow to Delhi within an hour. The organ was retrieved from a brain dead patient who was victim of a road accident,” said a release issued by the hospital authorities here.

A green corridor was created by the Delhi Police so the organ could be smoothly transported from the Delhi airport to Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.
The liver covered the distance of 29 km in 26 minutes.
Maj Gen (Dr ) L.R. Sharma, director, Medical Services, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said: “This was achieved through seamless coordination between the two hospitals and also cooperation of the Delhi Police authorities. A medical team transported the liver over 29 km from the airport to Apollo Delhi in less than 26 minutes by creating a green corridor. The response time of the hospital is very quick. We have to prepare for a transplant within minutes of the arrival of the organ.”
