Ex-BSES employee held for fraud

February 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 10:13 am IST - New Delhi:

With the arrest of an ex-BSES employee, the Delhi Police on Thursday claimed to have busted a gang that conducted fake raids posing as officials of the electricity company.

Avinesh, 28, was nabbed near Cross River mall in Shahdara in a joint operation by the East District police and a vigilance team of BSES on Tuesday.

The raid was conducted after the BSES officials approached the police on learning about this gang. The gang would target people who had huge outstanding dues.

B.S. Gurjar, DCP (East), said the police were probing how the gang procured the list of consumers with large outstanding bills.

“Whether the gang was being helped by someone inside the company or they were hacking the BSES system to get the list is being investigated,” said Mr. Gurjar.

Posing as BSES officials, the gang members would claim they had come to recover the outstanding dues.

One of them would then propose an understanding as per which the dues could be ‘cleared’ by paying a certain part of the amount owed.

In their last attempt, just before the gang was busted, they had duped a Farsh Bazar resident of Rs.10,000 by this modus operandi, the police said.
