In another instance of drunk driving, an 18-year-old was on Wednesday knocked down by a car being driven by the employee of a private insurance company at suburban Juhu, police said.

The police has identified the deceased as Panda Paswan. The accused fled the scene after the accident, abandoning the vehicle. However, documents, including insurance papers, available in the car led the police to trace him.

The accused identified as Niranjan Shetty (36), employee with a private insurance company, was arrested from his Mira Road residence. He was driving home after attending a party and was under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place, Inspector Deepak Kathkade said.

According to police, Paswan, working as a cook at a Chinese stall, was going to dispose the waste at a garbage bin when the speeding car rammed him from behind at around 1 am.

Subsequently, the car hit an auto rickshaw and rammed into a bus stop. A police team rushed to the spot and took the injured to nearby hospital where he was declared dead, police said.

“We arrested Shetty from his Mira Road residence and was subjected to undergo medical tests which suggested that he had consumed alcohol,” Mr. Kathkade said.

The deceased hailed from Kolkata, he said, adding further probe was on.

In January, Nooriya Haveliwala, a beautician, under the influence of alcohol had rammed her car into a police jeep and a bike early morning, killing motorcyclist Afzal Maknejia (35) and assistant sub-inspector Dina Nath Shinde (40).
