His remarks about Modi's development initiatives had drawn flak

A meeting of the managing committee (Majlis-e-Shoora) of the Darul Uloom at Deoband in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh will now be held on February 23 to discuss the fate of the Islamic seminary's “Mohtamim” (Vice-Chancellor), Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi.

Maulana Vastanvi is embroiled in a controversy over his remarks that Muslims too had benefited from the development initiatives of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

It was proposed to hold a meeting of the “Shoora” on February 20 to discuss the issue. However, when a member expressed his inability to attend it, the meeting was shifted to February 23.

Darul Uloom's Naib Mohtamim (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi said the committee would, among other things, take up Maulana Vastanvi's move to submit his resignation in the wake of the controversy over his remarks. He clarified that the rector had not put in his papers and had “only expressed his desire to quit before the Shoora.”
