Corruption case against IPS officer, 5 held by Vigilance Dept.

The anti-corruption wing of the Odisha Police on Wednesday arrested five persons including an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) and registered cases against a senior IPS officer and five others on charge of misappropriation of public money.

Tripura cadre IPS officer Jaydeep Nayak, who was on deputation to Odisha, has been identified as the prime accused in the misappropriation case involving Rs 88 lakh.

Mr. Nayak, allegedly in connivance with others, disbursed Rs 88 lakh during 2014-15 in the name of making SC, ST students and SHG members computer literate when he was heading the Human Rights Protection Cell .

Mr. Nayak, who has gone back to his parent cadre, could not be immediately contacted for comment.

A case has been registered against Mr. Nayak and five others under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(d)(c) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, 467/468/409/120-B of IPC, an official statement issued by the Vigilance Department said.

Besides ex-IGP Nayak, the Vigilance Department also booked Basanta Kumar Pradhan, ex-DSP, Pracheta Kumar Mishra, former senior stenographer, all of the SC and ST Protection Cell of the Human Rights Protection Cell, Cuttack, Asutosh Mishra, Proprietor of Axis Computer, Kalyani Nagar, Cuttack, Chandi Charan Patnaik, general manager of M/s Axis Computer, Cuttack, and Mamata Rout, proprietor of Dev Graphics (Printing Press), Kalyani Nagar, Cuttack.

“The six persons including Mr. Nayak allegedly showed undue official favour and disbursed an amount of Rs 88 lakh to M/s Axis Computer in violation of financial norms, without floating any tender, furnishing false and fabricated documents, bills, utilisation/completion certificates and flouting orders, for which the government has sustained a huge loss,” the statement said.

“During course of investigation the accused persons including Basanta Kumar Pradhan, ex-DSP and at present Additional SP at the office of the DIG, South-West Range, Sunabeda, has been arrested today (Wednesday),” State Vigilance Director R. P .Sharma told reporters.
