Combined forces and Maoists exchange fire in West Midnapur

A gun battle on Sunday broke out between Maoists and combined forces in West Midnapur, police said.

On hearing the sound of a landmine blast, security personnel rushed to Bakisol village near here and exchanged several rounds of fire with the ultras.

However, casualties in the blast and firing were not immediately known, they said.

Meanwhile, two bullet-riddled bodies of CPI(M) supporters were recovered this morning from Pukhuria village, about 4 km from Jhargram town, they said.

Maoist posters owning responsibility for the death of CPI(M) supporters were also recovered from near the unidentified bodies dumped on the main road, the police said.

The police and combined forces have rushed to the area.

The joint forces have launched combing operations in Lalgarh, Ramgarh, Chowkishal and Bakisol near here, sources said.

Five CRPF personnel, including its Deputy Commandant, V P Singh, were killed in an IED blast at Lalgarh on May 19.

Meanwhile, the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities has called for a two-day bandh from tomorrow in Junglemahal area following the recovery of three bodies from Dasbandh in Sarenga in neighbouring Bankura district on Friday.

The PCPA has claimed the dead as their supporters while the CPI(M) claimed that the victims belonged to their party.
