Church vandalised in Madhya Pradesh

A group of activists of Dharma Sena and Bajrang Dal reportedly vandalised a church, a school premises and assaulted some members of the Christian community in Jabalapur on Friday night accusing them of carrying out a religious conversion programme.

Speaking to The Hindu ,Superindentent of Police, H.N.Mishra, who is investigating the case, said the miscreants have been identified with the help of CCTV camera footage and efforts were on to arrest them.

The trouble makers numbering around 20, he said, had come on foot and motorcycles and also threw flower pots kept outside the residence of a priest on two cars parked there damaging them extensively.

The mob ran away after a posse of policemen posted nearby rushed to the spot.

The policemen had been posted at a church premises in the neighbouhood as a precautionary measure following a complaint that a religious conversion ceremony may be held in the guise of a conference. An enquiry was conducted earlier in the day and this complaint was found to be wrong.

The situation is now under control, he added.

According to reports reaching here the mob raised slogans of `Jai Shree Ram’ as they went about smashing the vehicles.

Later speaking to The Hindu over phone, Jabalpur IG of Police D Sriniwas Rao asserted that the police would take all steps to book those involved in the attack. ``No effort would be spared to curb ulawful activities.’’
