The 65 Field Regiment of the Army's Red Horns Division has unearthed an extortion racket run by a hardcore cadre of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (Ranjan Daimary faction) after tracking calls made by him from mobile phones from his hideout in Bangalore.
Dedung Daimary alias Khangur, said to be a nephew of jailed NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary, was arrested by the Bangalore police on Sunday along with two others — Nisha Daimary and Johny Dung.
The Field Regiment, based at Mangaldoi in northern Assam's Darrang district, found that Khangur, with Nisha and Johny's assistance, was making extortion calls in the name of the NDFB to businessmen, petty traders and government officials in Darrang and Sonitpur districts. He asked them to deposit the amounts in State Bank of India accounts in the Shillong and Udalguri branch.

The Army Regiment unearthed the racket after corroborating inputs from the Call Detail Records analysis and ATM withdrawals from the suspected bank accounts. The Army authorities then approached the Darrang Superintendent of Police who, in turn, got in touch with the Bangalore police.
