8,000 Tripura insurgents have surrendered in last 17 years

Nearly 8,000 insurgents, including those of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura and All Tripura Tiger Force, have surrendered to the authorities in the last 17 years, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has said.

Since May, 1993 till date 7,992 insurgents belonging to various organisations, have surrendered, the Chief Minister told the State Assembly on Monday.

Mr. Sarkar, who is also the Home Minister, said in 2009-10 alone 225 insurgents had bid farewell to arms while 24 insurgency-related incidents took place during the period.

He said the number of insurgency-related incidents in 2007 was 113 which came down to 80 in 2008. Last year it was only 24.
