Inspired by the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) award presented for successfully recharging borewells in all six taluks of the district in the last fiscal by the Union government, the zilla panchyat has now come forward to rejuvenate tanks, wells and other sources of water in the next one year.
The work on the same began on April 1, in the presence of Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Nitesh Patil at Lingavarhatti tank in Chitradurga taluk.
According to official sources, the authorities concerned developed an action plan of Rs. 1 crore to rejuvenate tanks and sources of water in each gram panchayat.

The action plan has been readied for 190 gram panchayats and the work will be taken to ensure that most work, including removing silt and repairing bunds, is completed before the monsoon so that the ground water table is improved at considerable level.
The authorities concerned launched work simultaneously at 30 gram panchayats on April 1 across all the six taluks and the works in the remaining gram panchayats will be launched shortly.
The total allocated budget for the said works is Rs. 200 crore.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Nitesh Patil has also instructed the officers concerned to take stern action against those who use machines instead of equipments for the works taken up under MGNREGA, sources added.
