The work to plug the leakage in the Cauvery water supply pipeline to the town has finally commenced.
The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), following the excessive leakage of drinking water caused by frequent bursts in the pipe in recent days, has taken up a project to replace the decades-old pipes and valves in the Srirangapatna-Mandya Cauvery water supply pipeline.
The pipeline, laid to supply Cauvery water from Srirangapatna to Mandya and surrounding areas along the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway, had been damaged at several places between Gangangur and Srirangapatna on many occasions. To prevent recurring problems, the Board had replaced several damaged valves and joints near Ganangur.

Frequent water leakages have been causing loss of revenue to the Board, a senior officer at the KUWSDB told
The town, that has a population of around 1.50 lakh from all 35 wards, requires 30 MLD (million litres a day) water. While the Board has been pumping around 19 MLD, the actual supply to the town was between 15 and 16 MLD owing to leakage and other issues.
