‘Work to bring down female infanticide’

Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nurse and Midwives (ANMs) participating in a workshop on female infanticide at Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Kala Mandir in Mandya on Wednesday.

M.N. Ajay Nagabhushan, Deputy Commissioner of Mandya, has instructed the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nurse and Mid-wives (ANMs) to works for bringing down female infanticide in the district.

Mr. Nagabhushan was speaking at Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Kala Mandir here on Wednesday, after inaugurating a workshop on female infanticide for ASHA workers and ANMs.

The increasing number of incidents of female foeticide is a matter of grave concern. Socio-economic factors such as dowry and the preference for a male child are the main reasons of female infanticide and foeticide. The trend would definitely result in disastrous social consequences in future, he said.

Therefore, the ASHA and ANMs, and officials/personnel of all the departments concerned should decide and works against the menace, the DC said.

The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Police and Mandya Zilla Panchayat had organised the workshop here on Tuesday.

Mandya Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive of Rohini Sindhuri, Superintendent of Police Bhushan Gulabrao Borase and nearly 600 ASHA and ANMs were present.
