Manjula Manasa, chairperson of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission, has expressed displeasure over the poor maintenance of the post-matric hostel for girls belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes managed by the Department of Social Welfare here.
Speaking at a meeting to review the implementation government schemes for the welfare of women here on Thursday, Ms. Manasa said the quality of food being served to girls in the hostel was very poor. The department had failed to initiate measures to maintain cleanliness in the hostel. Girl students were not being provided with sanitary napkins, she said.
Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri said the number of students in the hostel was more than its capacity and therefore, it had been planned to shift to a more spacious accommodation.

Ms. Manasa said there were 2,108 sex workers in the district and directed District Health Officer Nagaraj Naik to take measures to reach the government’s welfare schemes to all sex workers. Expressing dissatisfaction over lack of proper medical services at the Government McGann Hospital here, she said there were complaints of the hospital staff receiving a sum of Rs. 500 each as bribe from the relatives of women delivering a girl child and Rs. 1,000 each from women delivering a baby boy. She directed medical officer at the McGann hospital to deal sternly with such instances of graft. Superintendent of Police Koushalendra Kumar was present.
