A 35-year-old woman, who was waiting to board a train to Mumbai from Raichur, gave birth to a girl on the railway platform on Saturday, without any medical help.

The woman, Susheela, along with her husband, Kudisanna Shinde, and their two children, was waiting on Platform No. 2 for catching the train for Mumbai when she went into labour and gave birth to the baby 30 minutes later. Just as his wife went into labour, Mr. Shinde desperately cried for help. A couple of women safai karmacharis, who were working on the other side of the platform, rushed to the spot.

By then, Ms. Susheela had delivered the baby.

The women took care of both mother and the newborn till the Railway staff arrived.

As the news spread, Railway officials and police rushed to the spot with a wheelchair. The mother and the newborn were then taken to the teaching hospital attached to the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences. “Hearing the cries for help, we rushed to the spot. The woman had already given birth to the child by then. Thank god, both mother and newborn are well,” said Mahadevamma, a 50-year-old safai karmachari.
