Woman fights off attacker with hammer

Unidentified man broke into her house and attempted to assault her

A 23-year-old software engineer, who hails from Chattisgarh and works with a multinational IT firm in the city, fought off a man who barged into her house while she was alone and attempted to assault her.

The incident took place on Friday evening in HAL police station limits.

Around 4.15 p.m., the man broke into her house and tried to pin her down. In her statement to the police, the woman said that he warned her not to shout for help as he was armed with a gun. However, the woman fought back. “She sustained injuries on her neck and face as the man slapped her repeatedly. But she was able to grab a hammer, attack with him with it, and shout for help,” said a police officer.

Realising that he could get caught, the man fled. The woman was was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

Stalking suspected

The HAL police are verifying CCTV footage to identify the accused. “She told us that he called himself Arun. We suspect that he had been stalking her for many days,” a police officer said. The man has been charged under Sections 354B (Assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 367 (Punishment for rape), 323 (Assault) and 506 (Criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
