Whether there is a law that mandates it or not, wearing helmet is always a must for a motorcyclist for his or her own safety. The bikers of the “99 Cannons” Club conveyed the same through ‘Gandhigiri’ in the twin cities on Sunday.
Organised with the assistance of the Hubballi Dharwad Traffic Police, the initiative was in response to the call for Pan India ‘Ride for Safety’ given by the Brotherhood of Bulleteers Motorcycling Consortium (BOBMC).
In addition to riding around the city with stickers and banners on road safety, the bikers from 99 Cannons chose to exhibit ‘Gandhigiri’ by giving sweets to the ‘helmetless’ motorcyclists.

Beginning from Hotel Panjurli on Siddappa Kambali Road, their first stop was at Kittur Channamma Circle. Aided by the traffic police, the bikers greeted the motorcyclists riding without helmets with chocolates in a bid to make them realise their mistake of riding their vehicle without wearing the protective gear.
Led by President of the club, Sanjeev Bhatia, the bikers explained to the riders the necessity of wearing helmets for their own safety. They also gave few tips to the motorcyclists on safe riding.
They then rode towards Dharwad and stopped at Unakal Lake to sensitise the public and give chocolates to the ‘helmetless’ riders. Carrying the banners on road safety they stopped at Navanagar to continue their ‘Gandhigiri’.

The ‘Ride for Safety’, in which 40 bikers took part, concluded at Jubilee Circle in Dharwad where again the bikers spent some time educating the motorcyclists on wearing the protective head gear.
