Villages to boycott gram panchayat elections

May 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - KALABURAGI/YADGIR:

The villages coming under the Hunasagi Gram Panchayat in Surpur taluk in Yadgir district and Ramnagar Gram Panchayat in Afsalpur taluk in Kalaburagi district are boycotting the gram panchayat elections by not fielding even a single candidate in any of the constituencies in the elections scheduled to be held on June 2.

While the reason given for the boycott in Hunasagi Gram Panchayat was the failure of the government to upgrade their gram panchayat as town panchayat, the grouse of the Ramnagar Gram Panchayat was the reduction of the seats in the delimitation of the constituencies.

In Yadgir district, no nomination papers were filed in the six seats coming under Nasalwayi village in Anpur Gram Panchayat. In Kalaburagi district, no nomination papers were filed in the seven seats coming under Bhagodi Gram panchayat in Chitapur taluk, six seats coming under the Donagoan Gram Panchayat Chitapur taluk, three seats coming under Kodli Gram Panchayat in Chincholi taluk and two seats in Nagur Gram Panchayat. After the scrutiny of 14,341 nomination papers filed in 243 gram panchayats in Kalaburagi, 275 nomination papers were rejected and a total 13,825 nomination papers were found valid. In Yadgir district, out of the total 7,084 nomination papers received, 208 nomination papers were found invalid and rejected. The last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers is Monday.
