Though entire North Karnataka is reeling under cold waves, Vijayapura, known for its scorching heat, seems to be competing with the likes of Delhi where too the minimum temperature is fluctuating between 4 and 6 degree Celsius.

H. Venkatesh, meteorologist at the Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS), said that it is the lowest temperature recorded by the district in the month of January in recent years.

He said that in December 2010, the district had recorded the lowest temperature of only six degree celsius.

On Saturday, the minimum temperature was 6.7 degree celsius, on Sunday, it increased a bit to 7.1 degree celsius, further on Monday to 7.5 degree celsius. From Monday, the temperature again started dipping.

Dr. Venkatesh said that since such weather is expected in Northern India, people prepare themselves well in advance to face the cold wave. “Since it’s uncommon here, people are not prepared and it only adds to the problem”, he said.
