Judge of the High Court of Karnataka L. Narayana Swamy, chairman of the Karnataka High Court Legal Services Committee, has advised officials to use school students and teachers as informers to draw up a list of uncapped borewells in every village in the State. He was speaking at the Regional Lok Adalat on environmental problems here on Saturday.
Mr. Narayana Swamy expressed concern over uncapped borewells having turned into death traps for children. He criticised district administrations for not having the data on uncapped borewells. He suggested that schoolchildren and teachers be used by the district administrations to collect data on uncapped borewells.
Students and teachers in every village would be aware of many social ills such as the Devadasi system and child marriage, he said, and added that the administration should use them as informers to put an end to such ills. Such an exercise would help in educating students and making them better citizens, he said. The Lok Adalat appreciated measures initiated by the Kolar district administration and local civic bodies for segregating solid waste at the source.
