Arvind Malagatti, professor at Kuvempur Kannada Study Centre, University of Mysore, Mysuru, while expressing concern over decline in the quality of research, underlined the need for researchers to consider works by amateurs as a model.
“It appears that researches are being carried out for the sake of getting degrees and eligibility, due to which the quality of research is on the decline. But amateur researchers concentrate on finding the truth without any interest in eligibility. Therefore those can be taken as a model,” he said.
He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop for researchers organised at Kannada University, Hampi, on Tuesday.

He also suggested that only those with the guts to tell the truth should enter the field of research. He recalled that M.M. Kalburgi, who was recently killed, was among the few who told the truth.
Mr. Malagatti said there should be no restrictions on when research can be carried out. He said instead of restricting research to post-graduation, it could be introduced right from pre-university level with encouragement to students to inculcate interest in the process and subjects.
T. Vasantkumar, retired professor from Bombay University, who was the chief guest, also spoke.
