Unauthorised clinics in Mysore raided

July 18, 2013 02:10 pm | Updated 02:10 pm IST - Mysore

A team of health officials, led by Mysore District Health Officer S.M. Malegowda, continuing the drive against quackery here on Wednesday, raided two unauthorised premises of quacks and seized empty capsules and a certain powder for medicinal use stored in one of the premises.

In the first raid, Venkataramaiah, an ex-serviceman, who was running a blood bank in Jayanagar without licence, could not be traced as he had vacated the premises a few days ago on coming to know of the raids.

He was served notices by the Health Department on three earlier occasions but he had continued to indulge in collection of blood from unsuspecting people, Dr. Malegowda said.

In the second raid near the National Market, it was found that Vijay Mahajan, who was running an unauthorised clinic, allegedly cheated people with promises that he would cure their sexual problems.

Mahajan, who was not present when the raid happened, did not possess a certificate under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act, Dr. Malegowda said.

The officials, who opened the clinic’s doors with help of keys provided by Mahajan’s assistant, found empty capsules and some powder given as medicine to gullible patients.

Mahajan’s assistant had booked appointments for seven or eight patients for consultation.

Dr. Malegowda telephoned one of the patients, a woman, asking her not to visit the clinic as her “doctor” was a quack.

Some allopathic drugs were also found on the premises. The seized powder has been sent for laboratory examination.
