Two-year jail for govt. hospital employee

A special court here has convicted a first division assistant (FDA) at the government hospital in Nanjangud of corruption.

G. Puttaswamy, the FDA, was found guilty by the Third Additional District Sessions and Special Court of demanding a bribe from S. Suresh, a resident of Nanjangud, whose sister-in-law had bagged the contract for running the hospital’s canteen for two years in 2010.

Complaint

Suresh, who lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta, said that Puttaswamy had summoned him home about 15 days after the tender was approved in favour of his sister-in-law Vanajakshi, and demanded that he be paid Rs. 7,000 per month to allow them to run the canteen.

As Puttaswamy’s demand was not met, a notice was sent to the complainants in the name of the medical officer. When Puttaswamy was asked about the notice, he said the canteen will not be allowed to function till the complainant did not meet his demand to pay Rs. 7,000 per month.

Conviction

The Lokayukta police filed a charge sheet against Puttaswamy before the special court in August 2012.

In the order delivered on February 25, the court convicted Puttaswamy and awarded him two years rigorous imprisonment.
