In a move to help transgenders and bring them into the social mainstream, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced “Mythri”, a new scheme under which a monthly pension of Rs. 500 will be paid.
Akkai Padmashali, an activist from Sangama, said that it was a very positive step with the government fulfilling their long-pending demand.
However, Ms. Akkai said that Rs. 500 was meagre considering the plight of transgenders.

Though the approximate population of transgenders in the State was 30,000, there was a need to conduct a census to have a clear picture, she added.
Similarly, Mr. Siddaramaiah announced “Manaswini” to provide monthly pension of Rs. 500 to unmarried women who have crossed the age of 40 and also divorced women under the below poverty line category.
