M.L. Samaga, former Chairman of Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, inaugurating a workshop on ‘Learning literature through theatre’ in Udupi.

M.L. Samaga, former Chairman of Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, said on Tuesday that theatre can play a complementary role in learning literature.

He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Learning literature through theatre’ organised by the Department of English and English Forum of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, here.

Prof. Samaga said that human emotions, thoughts, dilemmas and complexities of life were all found in the works of literature. But these emotions and complexities were best portrayed in theatre and they left an indelible mark on one’s mind. Theatre was a part of life.

“While learning to learn, students must also learn and take interest in theatre. A judicious combination of the two leaves a better imprint of literature. This also helps in creation of a just society based on human values,” Prof. Samaga said.

R. Purnima from Mysore University, resource person of the workshop, said theatre was one of the best media to express human emotions. Kavya welcomed the gathering. Sandhya Nambiar, Head of the Department of English at the college, delivered the introductory remarks.

Kusuma Kamath, Principal of the college, presided over the function. Manasa proposed a vote of thanks. Prateeksha Poojary, Secretary of English Forum, was present.
