HCL to manage UIDAI’s technology backbone
Hardware firm HCL Infosystems Ltd. will manage the Central ID Repository (CIDR) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the authority that implements the Aadhaar project. The UIDAI inked a pact awarding HCL a contract for seven years.
As the designated managed services provider, HCL will be responsible for the procurement and installation of the IT infrastructure, implementation of information security management systems and operations support and maintenance. The scope of work also includes technical helpdesk, support services and database administration.

In a release, B.B. Nanawati, Deputy Director-General (Technology), UIDAI, said: “We are happy to partner with HCL Infosystems Ltd., which is a longstanding and prestigious Indian IT company. With this, UIDAI looks forward to maximising efficiency and to bring to fruition the goal of providing a unique identification number to every Indian.”

Tech major IBM announced that HMEL, a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investment Private Ltd., Singapore, has adopted a new IBM analytics-based solution to transform how the company manages its financial and operations data to boost business performance.
In a media symposium held here to showcase IBM’s products and achievements in the field of analytics, experts from IBM spoke about how there is increasing awareness on the power and benefits of analytics in the Indian market. They spoke of a range of applications, from analytics solutions used to create knowledge out of structured and unstructured data in the enterprise to its artificial intelligence system, Watson, which famously participated in the game show Jeopardy last year.
Design engineers converge at MATLAB EXPO
MATLAB EXPO, the third annual user conference hosted by MathWorks, a leading developer of mathematical computing software, was held this week in Bangalore. An audience of over 700 Indian design engineers from various industries such as aerospace and defence; automotive; computers, electronics and semiconductors; industrial automation and machinery; and technology services participated in the daylong event.
MathWorks technical experts from India and overseas presented recently introduced capabilities of MATLAB and Simulink in the areas of data analysis and processing, system modelling and simulation, and implementation and verification.

Conference on information processing
The sixth international conference on information processing was inaugurated at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering on Thursday.
This year’s conference was aimed at stimulating technical exchange among scientists and engineers to capture innovative and state-of-the-art research papers in the emerging field of information processing.
The three-day conference started with tutorial sessions on ‘The art and science of mathematical and computational modelling’ by G.K. Patra, Principal Scientist, CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Stimulation; and ‘stimulation of wireless technologies using Qualnet network stimulator’, by Bhargav Raman S.P. and Prashant S.H., Communication Engineers, Nihon Communication Solution Private Ltd.
Seventy-five papers on topics such as wireless networks, image processing, pattern recognition and classification, wireless and computer networks and network security, software engineering, information technology and optimisation techniques, network security, data mining techniques, data mining and Web mining were presented during the symposium.
