In the wake of a dengue outbreak in the city, Deputy Commissioner M. Lokesh has directed officials of the Department of Health and Family Welfare and those of Shivamogga City Corporation to put in place vector-control measures.
He was speaking at a meeting on Wednesday on the measures to be taken to prevent the spread of dengue and other infectious diseases. He said of the 314 dengue positive cases reported in the district in 2017, 80 were from Shivamogga city and 50 from Bhadravati.
The Aedes aegypti variety of mosquito, which acts as a vector to transmit the virus causing dengue, lays eggs in water stored in unused tyres, cycle tubes and pots. Clogged drains are also breeding sites. He directed officials to take measures to prevent accumulation of water in unused tyres and pots, and to clear clogged drains.

He also asked them to spread awareness on this through door-to-door visits. He also directed the corporation to clear weeds and solid waste accumulated on vacant sites in residential areas.
Mayor Elumalai and Deputy Mayor Roopa Lakshman were present at the meeting.
