It will not be appropriate to term the State government’s socio-educational survey of families as caste census, H. Kantaraj, chairman, Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, has said.

He said here on Friday that the survey would provide valuable data to carve out reservation for various communities and create welfare schemes for future.

“For example, we have 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes in panchayat bodies. But then, there is no clear data about which communities form the OBCs in various districts. That is why we need the survey,” Mr. Kantaraj said.

The estimated cost of the survey was around Rs. 185 crore.
