Main streets of Hassan wore a deserted look on Wednesday.

The nationwide strike called by trade unions received a good response in Hassan on Wednesday.

Most of the shops and other business establishments downed shutters, public transport was off the road and schools and colleges remained closed.

As Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation workers’ unions had extended support to the strike, it was a long wait for commuters at bus-stands in the city. Only a few autorickshaws were plying.

The district administration had declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Wednesday.

Attendance thin

While banks remained closed, attendance was thin in government offices. There were no reports of any untoward incidents in the city.

Members of trade unions took out a rally in the city criticising the economic policies of the Union government. They blamed this for the hike in the prices of essential commodities, including fuel. Employees of banks, Life Insurance Corporation, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and the Department of Posts took part in the rally.

The protesters have decided to take out a rally on Thursday also.
