Various Stree Shakti groups and Mahila Mandals in the city joined hands and launched a week-long awareness campaign against the increasing ‘chain-snatching’ incidents in the city and other parts of the district.

The campaign, launched on Monday, aims at creating awareness among women on preventive measures and sensitising the police on the need to show some pro-activeness in not only arresting the culprits but taking necessary preventive measures to prevent such crimes.

A substantially good number of women activists have now spread out all over the city and distributing pamphlets with tips in Kannada and Marathi languages on the role to be played by the women first to keep the chain-snatchers at bay which includes advising women not wear gold ornaments outside to carry a stick and a whistle while venturing out alone.

Activists Pramoda Hazare, district general secretary of National Federation of India Women, saw chain-snatching as a manifestation of violence against women, said though the police need to ensure safety of women in cities and town, the women was also expected not invite trouble by wearing jewellery and move alone on deserted roads.

Meanwhile, the city police have also decided to take up massive awareness drive, install more CCTV cameras in different parts of the city, and ready striking parties at shortest notice of the chain-snatching incident or other crime.
