State directs RCU to postpone interviews

June 16, 2013 10:30 am | Updated 10:30 am IST - BELGAUM:

The Rani Channamma University has temporarily postponed interviews for recruitment of first division assistants (FDAs).

According to Registrar Vishnukant S. Chatapalli here on Saturday, this decision was taken following a direction from the Secretary, Higher Education. Candidates were informed of the postponement immediately after the communication was received. Interestingly, the government’s direction comes in the wake of news reports on alleged irregularities in the recruitment process and letters in this regard to the Chief Minister; the Higher Education Minister; the Secretary, Higher Education; the Governor and the RCU Vice-Chancellor.

RCU had conducted exams to recruit FDAs, second division assistants and data entry operators. Nearly 4,000 candidates passed the exams, of which 496 were short-listed for interviews for 45 FDA posts. The interviews were scheduled to be held on Friday.

When asked about the violation of the rule of maintaining 1:3 ratio of posts to candidates (there are 496 candidates vying for 45 posts, when there should have been 135), Prof. Chatapalli said there were a large number of candidates who had scored well. The university would not deny them the opportunity to attend the interview.

Transparency has been maintained in the recruitment process, he added. He described the allegations of corruption and favouritism in recruitment as “speculative in nature; there have been no complaints of any irregularity in the recruitment process”.
