‘Spread awareness on law against manual scavenging’

Hassan Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, on Friday, directed officers of urban local bodies to spread awareness on the law that prohibits manual scavenging and educate municipal workers not to take such works.

At a meeting, the DC told the officers to conduct a training programme on the prohibition of manual scavenging. “The workers should not take up the work unaware of the law that prohibits manual scavenging. Urban local bodies should conduct workshops to educate them on the law,” she said. Septic tanks should not be cleaned manually. The urban local bodies should educate the public to hire sucking machines to clean the tanks. The DC also told officers to identify municipal workers who do not have houses and provide them with houses.

Hassan CMC Commissioner Roopa Shetty, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department Venkataramana Reddy, and others were present.
