Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can speed up business growth by adopting cloud computing, speakers said at an IT conclave organised by CII, Karnataka, here on Friday.

Cloud, like the social media, is transforming the way SMEs do business, they said. Initial concerns were decreasing about SMEs data being managed by a shared centre outside their premises.

They now understood cloud’s importance to their growth in a changing business environment.

Addressing the conclave on “IT as a driver of business growth”, CII, Karnataka, chairman, and Taegutec India Pvt. Ltd. managing director L. Krishnan said that SMEs had become increasingly IT-driven but found it difficult to sustain their IT infrastructure. Cloud was the solution, he added.

Microsoft India chairman Bhaskar Pramanik, who chairs CII’s IT and ITeS Committee, said that an enterprise was gauged from how quickly its technology can move and align with the changing times.

Nowadays, “people depend more on social media posts for user experiences. This will shape the feedback mechanism and the entire product design lifecycle,” he said.

Transforming SMEs, he added, can choose from many applications at a single point through telecom players.

According to Principal Secretary, IT, I.S.N. Prasad, ESDM or electronic system design manufacturing will be the focus of IT companies in the near future. ESDM serves domestic SMEs and MNC majors.

CII released a report on “Adopting Cloud services to drive business value”.
