Seminar discusses guidelines on autism

The Asare School and Rehabilitation Centre for Special Children, in association with Department of Speech and Hearing, School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS), Manipal University, organised a one-day seminar on ‘Basic Identification, Early Intervention and Handling of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders’ here on October 10.

According to a press release issued by the Manipal University here on Tuesday, Krishna Y., Head of the Department of Speech and Hearing, SOAHS, inaugurated the programme, which was the first of its kind in Udupi district.

About 40 delegates/participants, including special educators, volunteers and students of Masters in Social Work programme took part. The speaker Shivani Tiwari, Associate Professor, Department of Speech and Hearing, in her presentation, provided a brief introduction on autism, its causes, characteristics, assessment and management, with emphasis on early identification of children with autism.

The presentation also highlighted the identification and management of communication and behavioural needs of children with autism as well as guidelines on handling such children in the classroom to enhance learning behaviour.

The presentation was followed by a brief demonstration of a few common problem behaviour and handling techniques by the students of Department of Speech and Hearing.

At the end of the session, there was a discussion on issues faced by various special educators at their work place/environment.

Around 42 teachers of seven special schools in Udupi district too participated in the seminar.
