Yashogathe , which was being described in promos as ‘a new age periodical horror and suspense film’, is not an easy movie to watch for those expecting run-of-the-mill stuff.

Vinod J. Raj takes viewers back to the pre-Independence days, when cries of Inquilab Zindabad resonated across the country and freedom fighters faced harsh treatment at the hands of the British. He takes the audience through an abstract narrative of isolation, trauma and heavily guarded secrets.

It is technically polished, with period costumes and properties, and a good ensemble of actors. The two-hour film speaks of the sacrifices of men and women during the pre-Independence days.

The story revolves around Triveni, the female protagonist, and Narayana, a young boy who comes to learn music. The women in the house give him a place to stay and learn, which results in unusual occurrences. How Triveni, also a freedom fighter, tries to resolve the issue forms the crux of the film.

Vinod J. Raj elevates the experience with a haunting background score and fluent camera work.

The century-old house amidst a verdant forest and the isolated existence of the protagonists provides a perfect backdrop.
