Respite from scorching heat

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:31 am IST - Bidar:

There is some respite from heat wave conditions in Hyderabad Karnataka, which has been under scorching heat for nearly a month. Cold winds began to waft across the region from Thursday night.

On May 29, Kalaburagi’s maximum temperature, which had last week touched 45 degrees Celsius, came down to 38.9 degrees Celsius. Bidar saw 42 degrees C and Raichur 38 degrees C.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the temperature will drop in the coming days. Though the mercury may again shoot up to 40 degrees in Kalaburagi and 41 in Bidar, it will begin dropping from June 1. In the summer months, temperatures in Bidar, Kalaburagi and Raichur districts peaked at different periods. Raichur had the highest recorded temperature of 45.6 degrees C in the entire State on May 23. On May 25, Kalaburagi seethed at 45 degrees C. Bidar remained hotter than all other Hyderabad Karnataka districts with 43 degrees C on May 19 and 20. The problem was compounded in Bidar that has had three failed monsoons. Crops suffered damage and water scarcity continues to haunt the district.

With the water levels in the Karanja dam dropping to less than 1 tmcft, the government was forced to allow municipal and rural bodies to sink borewells in residential areas.

Officials say the rain in the first week of June might address the issue.
