The residents of Nandihalli (J) in Shahapur taluk of Yadgir district poured out their tales of woes to Deputy Commissioner Manoj Jain and demanded his intervention to ensure that basic civic amenities is extended to the residents of the village immediately.

A delegation from the village, with a population of around 900, met Mr. Jain in his office on Friday and submitted a memorandum stating that all their efforts to move the gram panchayat officials to attend to the problems faced by the villagers have been in vain.

They said the village lacked a drainage system, and the sewage from individual houses freely flowed on the road. On a few roads, this water has collected in big pools and have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. Due to the lack of individual and public toilets, the people are forced to use open spaces and agricultural fields for defecation. The villagers demanded that the construction of individual toilets be implemented effectively.

The villagers were also not in a position to draw water from the borewells as the handpumps affixed to them had developed some faults and was dysfunctional for the past several months. Many requests to repair the handpumps had fallen on deaf ears, and the residents are forced to walk around half a kilometre to fetch water from the stream flowing near the village.

Mr. Jain, who gave a patient hearing to the pleas of the villagers, promised to direct the officers concerned to visit the village and attend to all the problems of the villagers immediately.
