Rani Channamma University offering course onGoods and Services Tax for B.Com students

Those in fifth and sixth semesters will study all about GST from this year itself

Rani Channamma University is introducing a course on Goods and Services Tax in the college curriculum from this academic year.

Students of fifth and sixth semesters of Bachelor of Commerce will study all about GST from this year itself, head of the department H.Y. Kamble has said.

Students will not only attend theory classes but will also get to solve practical problems. They will be given case studies taken from real companies and firms, and asked to come up with solutions to the problems.

Apart from training its teachers, the university will use the services of working professionals, including tax practitioners, chartered accountants and lawyers, to train students.

“We are probably among the first in the country to start a course on GST,” Siddu Alagur, Registrar (Academic) of the university, told The Hindu . “We have already prepared the curriculum for students and training manual for teachers. Around 15,000 students in Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapura will benefit from this,” he said.

“We hope to make students job-ready before they leave colleges,” Mr. Kamble said. “GST is here to stay and you need to be updated about this if you are looking for a job or if you want to be an entrepreneur. All our preparations have been completed and classes will start this month,” Prof. Kamble said. The university has held a series of workshops before preparing the study material and textbooks, he added.
